Jesus gave to the church those who would provide care, concern and wisdom (shepherds, overseers and servants, brothers and sisters). When the church became an institution, these became positions of power. Office in an institution means position, power, rank, control and authority.
I appreciate some of the things Brian McLaren preaches and writes, but it is missing the point to endorse a role of the pastor in post modernity that existed in modernity (and every other nities).
