Maybe a good beginning point toward understanding baptism is to ask “Is baptism a Catholic or a Protestant sacrament?”  Most Protestants believe baptism is an outward sign of an inward grace, while Catholics believe the outward act produces the inward grace.  Perhaps it is neither.
